  • Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada's most easterly province is made up of 2 separate land masses. The island of Newfoundland with an area of 42,000 sq. miles is the world's 15th. largest island and has 485,000 inhabitants. Labrador, the mainland portion of the province adjacent to Quebec, is separated from Newfoundland by the narrow Labrador Strait and is very sparsely populated.
  • Before joining Canada in 1949 as the 10th. province, Newfoundland & Labrador was Britain's oldest colony. The majority of Newfoundland's population is of English, Irish and Scottish descent, but at times during its long history, areas Newfoundland had been occupied by the French, as evidenced by the names of many Newfoundland communities. Unlike several of the other Eastern Canadian provinces, Newfoundland and Labrador does not have any French-speaking communities. The Aboriginal Peoples are represented by a small number of Mikmaq (Micmac) indians on the island and the Innu and Innuit in Labrador. The educational institutions and industry has attracted people of many nations to the province in recent years.

All Newfoundland communities are joined by a very good system of roads.

  • The economy of Newfoundland and Labrador had traditionally been based on the fishery, but during the past century has been supplemented by natural resources-based activities such as mining and pulp and paper. In the late 1970's the Hibernia oil field was discovered on the Grand Banks off Newfoundland. The ongoing oil discovery process and the service industry built around production has greatly raised the economic activity in the province, especially the eastern area of the Province.
  • Memorial University of Newfoundland and its affiliated colleges and technical schools have produced a highly-educated work force who have taken advantage of the highly-paid jobs in the oil industry and research, an example being the National Research Council's Institute for Ocean Technology. Another example of the wold-wide involvement in educational projects is the The College of The North Atlantic's Middle East campus in Qatar. These are only a couple of examples of what is happening in Newfoundland & Labrador in 2006.
